Boxed In Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern for 2022 Moogly CAL
I am so excited to bring you the Boxed In Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern for the 2022 Moogly CAL.
I have long admired the annual Moogly CAL! for it’s genius way of making an afghan less overwhelming by spreading it out over a year just ONE SQUARE AT A TIME! It is so special to be part of this amazing CAL once again.
And don’t forget to show off your finished squares!!!!
The beauty of my Boxed In Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern for the 2022 Moogly CAL is that you can customize it in many ways. If you are using 5 colors, you can easily swap out the center squares to match your own color scheme or play around with the color border like Tamara did for her Square multi color square.
You can also make it 2 colors if that is your Jam and make the center like an X of inner granny squares. Whatever your color scheme, the beauty of this square is that there are lots of opportunities to make it your very own style.
For me, the Boxed In Granny Square was super fun to design and make. I am in the midst of moving and it was fully inspired by my moving boxes all around me and my last trip to Chicago O’Hare Airport with a stop at my beloved Garrett popcorn. I made my Boxed In Granny Square on the plane to get the keys to my new house, then finished her up IN the new house. So the inspiration followed me through the making. So fun!
And hey - before we go on to the square itself, let’s chat about gauge.
Anyone who knows me and Stitch & Hustle patterns know that we say it all the time: GAUGE MATTERS!
But really for this project … Gauge matters to the point that you need consistency. But if you have gauge issues you can add rounds of the trim. I designed this square specifically so that you would be able to make it not only the 12'“ square that is called for in the Moogly Afghan CAL, but also continue to make these in many sizes to enjoy for various projects.
Moogly also has some wonderful tips to make your square just the size you need for your project. Check it out here.

This pattern features joined Rounds
Your finished square will measure 12” x 12” after blocking. If you find you are a snug stitchter, you can repeat the last 2 rounds in any color you like to meet the 12” square size for the CAL.
When joining colors, it is best to join them with a “anchoring sc” that will NOT count as a st and is not mentioned in the pattern.
Begin by making your 4 inner granny squares.
As noted above, if you would like to make 4 separate inner colors like Tamara did in her Moogly Square, just make the center rounds 1 & 2 in the colors.
Begin with Magic Circle (or ch3, sl st to join as a circle)
Round 1: ch 3 (acts as dc), ch 2 more for corner, 3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2, 2 dc, sl st to top of ch 3
Round 2: ch 5 (acts as a dc + ch 2), 3 dc in same sp,* ch 1, sk 3dc, [3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in ch 2 sp for corner *; Repeat * to * twice more, ch 1, 2 dc in corner sp, sl st to c3rd st of ch 5
Fasten Off Color.
ALL SQUARES:
COLOR A:
Join at any corner:
Round 1: ch 1 (does NOT act as st), * hdc across (7 sts) to corner, [hdc, ch2, hdc] in corner sp *; Repeat * to * around, sl st to first hdc.
Fasten Of Color A
JOIN YOUR SQUARES
Using Mattress stitch, with Color A, join 2 squares.
Then join the other 2 squares
Now take your two joined sets of squares, and join them using the same method.
BEGIN BORDER ROUNDS:
***Join your yarn at any corner***
COLOR A:
ROUND 1: ch 1 (does not act as a st), * hdc across to corner, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in corner; Repeat * to * around, sl st to first hdc. Fasten off Color A.
COLOR D
ROUND 2: Repeat Round 1 with COLOR D
COLOR C:
ROUND 1: ch 1 (does not act as a st), * dc across to corner, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner; Repeat * to * around, sl st to first hdc. Fasten off Color A.

Add more rounds if desired.
