Into The Deep Cabled Shawl Free Knitting Pattern

One of my favorite things about the collaborations I get to do at Stitch & Hustle is how it truly gives each designer or dyer or atist and opportunity to shine. We all bring our best every single time. This Into The Deep collaboration is yet another example of me saying “WOW I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM PART OF THIS!”

Featuring the lush and rich colorways of our fave indie dyer, Stephanie of Asylum Fibers, Into The Deep is a cable knit shawl designed by Makenzie Alvarez. Makenzie is well known as the QUEEN of cables. Her vision for textured dimensional knitting is simply magical. I love how she took that style to the next level with Into the Deep. Though it is an intermediate pattern, it is also for those risk taking beginners. Filled with charts and steps to take your shawl knitting NEXT LEVEL and Into The Deep!

PATTERN NOTES:

Shawl is worked from point up. Once depth is reached, short rows are worked to increase wingspan. The short rows give the shawl its unique shape.

I-cord edging is created as you work.  Shawl is written and charted.

Double Seed Stitch:
Due to the pattern increases stitches are worked as follows.

Row 1 (RS) right side rep (p1, k1), left side rep (k1, p1)

Row 2 (WS) left side rep (k1, p1), right side rep (p1, k1)

Row 3 (RS) right side rep (k1, p1), left side rep (p1, k1)

Row 4 (WS) left side rep (p1, k1), right side rep (k1, p1)

I-cord Bind Off

Using an I-cord Bind Off will create a seamless I-cord finished edge.

1.      Knit 2, knit 2 together through the back loop, slip the 3 sts just worked back onto the left needle. (1 st bound off) Rep until 6 sts remain.

2.      Knit 2, knit 4 stitches together, slip first 2 stitches over last stitch one at a time. (1 st remains on needle). Cut working yarn and weave in ends.

Continue working in pattern as established using chars 2,3, and 4 cable repeats. increase 2 sts every RS Row by adding m1 to the Double Seed pattern (see Knitters Notes) until you reach 332 sts, ending on WS.

Begin Short Rows.

Short Rows

Row 1 (RS): Work in established pattern until 1 st before second marker, w&t.

Row 2 and 4 (WS): Work sts as established to last 3 sts, sl3wyif.

Row 3: Work in established pattern until 2 sts before gap, w&t.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 thirty more times. (32 wrapped sts total)

Next: K3, p2, sm, m1p, p to gap, (pick up the wrap around the stitch and p it with its st) rep to marker, remove marker, p to marker, sm, work sts as established to marker, m1, sm, p2, sl3wyif.

Row 1 (WS): K5, sm, work sts as established to 1 st before marker, w&t.

Row 2 and 4 (RS): Work in established pattern to marker, m1, sm, p2, sl3wyif.

Row 3: K5, sm, work sts as established to 2 sts before gap, w&t.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 twenty nine more times.

Then Rep Row 3 once more. (32 wrapped sts total)

Next (RS): P to marker, m1p, sm, p2, sl3wyif.

Next (WS): K5, remove marker, k to gap, (pick up the wrap around the stitch and k it with its st) rep to marker, remove marker, k to last 3 sts, sl3wyif.
