Islander Summer Poncho Cover Up Free Crochet Pattern

The Islander Top is so perfect for all your summer styles. You can make it in smaller sizes as a top or slightly oversized for a great cover up for a day at the pool or beach. It works up super fast and pattern for sizes XS-3X. I was beyond honored when it was featured in the Going Green issue of Happily Hooked last March!
I used Wool And The Gang Tina Tape to design the Islander so it is lightweight, comfy in all weather and as a bonus it is environmentally friendly! I love how the Tina Tape helps it take shape and gives it that drape for the poncho style. My friend Leslie rocks the size XS below as a top for everyday and wears the 1X as an over-sized beach poncho.
It is such a great style you can make your own!

NOTES:
Block BEFORE assembly
Gauge: 8 sts x 3 rows = 4” in treble crochet / 8 sts x 5 rows = 4” in alternating rows of hdc and tr
Be sure to measure and to check your gauge and adjust hook size as needed
This poncho is crocheted in 2 pieces from the bottom up.
Leaving part of the shoulder seams unsewn creates “cold shoulder” openings.
MAKE TWO PANELS:
ROW 1: Fhdc x 61 (67, 73), turn.
ROW 2: Ch 1 (does NOT act as stitch), 61 (67, 73) hdc, turn.
ROW 3: Ch 3 (acts as first tr), 60 (66, 72) tr, turn.
ROWS 4 – 25 (27, 29): Repeat Rows 2 & 3 alternating, ending with a Row 3. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLY – SAME FOR ALL SIZES
Marry the tops of your panels together inside out.
Shoulder Seams:
Whipstitch together 1.5” at outside right corner, leave 8.25 (9.5, 10.75)” unsewn for right “cold shoulder”; whipstitch together the next 1.5”, leave 8 (8.5, 9)” unsewn for neck opening; whipstitch together the next 1.5”, 8.25 (9.5, 10.75)” unsewn for left “cold shoulder”, whipstitch together remaining 1.5” at outside left corner. Stitch across for 4 treble stitches at each connection.
SIDE TIES:
Ch 100 (106, 112), or to approx 37 (38.25, 39.5)”.
Pull the chain through one of the sides between outermost tr and next tr in, 6.5 (7.5, 8.5)” below shoulder seam.
Pull chain through until the halfway point is reached, and there are equal lengths hanging below. Lace each side of the chain in and out of side pieces as though lacing a pair of shoes.
When you reach the bottom edge, tie in a knot and then in a bow to secure.
