The Inspiration Wharf Shawl Pattern Set For The 2020 Long Island Yarn Crawl were inspired by and named for Inspiration Wharf - Port Washington, NY and designed for the Long Island Yarn Crawl of 2020. Truly - when Dina of The Knitting Place reached out to me to design these I was humbled and so excited. Immediately the ideas started to FLOW. I had a lot of fun designing these and translating the idea to stitches. Both the crochet and knit have their own features but are still true to the overall vision of the design. Talk about an INSPIRATION!

This is one of those pinch me - is this actually happening type of things!

The crochet design was made using Spun Right Round Squish DK from The Knitting Place and these colors are actually way out of my comfort zone.

When my friend Kristy Glass and I went to visit the Knitting Place and I got to meet and spend time with the owner Dina, I knew this would be an exciting adventure. The energy in the shop and between us gals was just magical. Kristy instantly fell in love with this trio of yarns and persuaded me they would be perfect for this collaboration. She is always more brave with colors than I am but I figured why not… I mean, WHY NOT?

I own nothing with these colors and could not be more excited to say that now I have the Inspiration Wharf Shawl in these colors.

As I worked up the pattern and design I fell more in love with the contrast and the way the colors worked in concert with each other with every stitch. The green popped in a way I did not expect and when paired with the stitch texture it truly became the “docks” I had envisioned against the lacey backdrop of the speckled pastels of the dye by Spun Right Round. I poured the coffee and got into the design mode.

This design was a stitch exploration just like the ebb and flow of water at the docks. I’ve always loved Wharfs and Piers. Something about the structural feat of a place to dock and where water meets land. The subtle lace sections represent the ebb and flow of the water lanes leading in and out of the Wharf .

Stephanie of Asylum Fibers created three (3) amazing Kits for these shawls and one is in my signature colors: Vacancy Grey, Shower Scene, and Scores. So of course I had to whip up yet another one. This time I made a few adventurous changes off pattern. I went down a hook size to a 4.5 mm and added a few extra lace rows. I also changed the spacing on the picot edges to make them “pop” a wee bit more.

For the knitting version of the Inspiration Wharf Shawl I used the Asylum Fibers DK and Stephanie created this amazing trio of colors as a kit featuring one of my faves from her shop: Creepy Graffiti. I love the subtle way the pinks and blue and purples pop and she married it with her vibrant purple Studio 54 and finished of the trio with trepidation Grey.

Like in the crochet version, I used a combination of stitch type techniques to create a flow and rhythm as you work this up. The lace is another illustration of the ebb and flow into the docks and I love the way the pattern lets you take that journey with each stitch.

For the second knit shawl I made using the High Tide, Dockside & Pink Sky colorways kit, I dropped down a needle size from the pattern and added a few rows to each section. I also spaced the picot edges more closely together and I truly love how it looks with these beautiful bright colors.
