Mitts Creek Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern

I could not be more excited to bring you the free version of the Mitts Creek Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern. A great beginner friendly crochet pattern to keep your hands warm and in style. I am sure that David Rose and fam would agree, one should never sacrifice fashion or style just for some warmth or temperature comfort. That would be a crime.

Anyone who knows me knows I love the television show Schitt’s Creek and Schitt’s Creek Fashion is a second love (sometimes the first). They have given me, and so many, so much over the 6 season. I love seeing people catching on to the show and celebrating all of their awards and accolades. It is a very special kind of fandom.

So this is my tribute. My creative thank you. My gift to other fans who crochet.

And in line with the love and community values of the show, when you buy the ad free pdf download of the Mitts Creek Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern, 50% goes to the Trevor Project - continuing to save lives and make a difference.

Schitt’s Creek brought us many laughs these last few years, along with a few tears and an abundance of amazing knitwear to drool over. I felt so inspired by the perfected monochromatic black and white wardrobe of the lead characters David Rose & Moira Rose (played by Daniel Levy & Catherine O’Hara respectively) - not to mention anyone who knows me knows that is my wheelhouse of color and knitwear style.

But, I did not want to simply “copy” those great designs and fashions of Schitt’s Creek. I mean, how could I even come close? No; the Mitts Creek Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern is merely my thank you and my tribute to the wonderful cast and crew and a show that gave us so much love - especially in the final season during 2020 when we really needed it.

And for some bonus fun - listen to me and Samantha of Bobble Club House have a chat and review of Schitt’s Creek Series premier episode on her podcast here and you too will fall in love and laugh and find joy in this cast of characters.

The Mitts Creek - Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern is also a GREAT stash-busting pattern if you are adventurous and want to escape the monochromatic black and white and add some pops of color.

I used Red Heart Yarn from my stash. They have a wide variety of category 4 weight yarns that work great for this pattern.

You can also grab some category 4 weight yarn from Lion Brand here and Basic Stitch is ideal for the The Mitts Creek - Schitt's Creek Inspired Mittens Free Crochet Pattern.

Stitches Used / Abbreviations:
fsc – foundation single crochet

slpsc2tog -  split single crochet 2 together decrease

PATTERN STITCH:
SPLSC –
Split Single Crochet. This is also often called Waistcoat Stitch. To create this you work sc between ‘legs’ of the sc when you insert your hook (splitting the sc stitch) instead of through top loops.

PATTERN NOTES:

The cuff is worked in rows then joined together. Using your smaller hook.
You can use the larger hook for a slightly larger cuff.
The body of the mitten is worked in the round with joined rounds.

Each round of the body begins with a ch 1 and ends with a sl st.
Neither of these count as a “stitch” – they are merely for construction

You will keep the unused color as strands in the back (inside) the body of the mitten.

Gauge for this pattern is not essential. What matters most is a fabric that fits.
The best way to create bigger mittens is to go up a hook size.
I actually went up 2 hooks sizes from my initial attempt in this design until I got a fit I liked.

The Split Single Crochet /Waistcoat Stitch creates a thick, not very stretchy fabric. Perfect for mittens. But without much stretch, go up a hook size if you think it seems “small”.

This is best worked using Intarsia Crochet and creating bobbins of your colors
