The sample uses a cotton yarn but this shawl would be lovely in any other DK-weight fiber - merino wool or a wool/cotton blend would be great for cooler temperatures!
Sanctuary Knit Shawl Free Knitting Pattern for Beginners
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
SUPPLY LIST
DK Weight Cotton yarn, 495 yds (452 m) used (The yarn I used for design is no longer available so I suggest any DK weight cotton.)
US 8 (5 mm) straight or circular knitting needles, 24" (60 cm) or longer
Tapestry needle (to weave in ends)
tape measure
FINISHED SIZE: 44" (112 cm) wide ×31" (79 cm) deep. For best results, wet block and the shawl will grow considerably.
GAUGE: 17 sts ×24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in garter stitch, blocked
ABBREVIATIONS
BO - bind off
CO - cast on
k - knit
k2tog - knit 2 together
p - purl
RS - right side
ssk - slip, slip, knit
sm - slip marker
st(s) - stitch(es)
WS - wrong side
yo - yarn over
NOTES
Please read through the pattern and all of the notes before beginning.
Gauge is not particularly important for this pattern. It matters more to have a fabric that you will like. The fabric is meant to be loose.
This pattern is written in sections and rows are numbered as such.
INSTRUCTIONS
CO 5 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K2, yo, place marker, k1, place marker, yo, k2. (7 sts)
Row 2 (WS): K2, p to last 2 sts, sm as you go, k2.
SECTION 1
Increase 4 sts per RS row:
Row 1: K2, yo, k to marker; yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, k to last 2 sts, yo, k2. (11 sts)
Row 2: Knit, sm as you go.
Rows 3–30: Repeat Rows 1 and 2. (67 sts after Row 30)
NOTE: Each section repeat adds 60 sts total.
SECTION 2 (Lace)
Increase 4 sts per RS row:
Row 1: K2, yo, * k2tog, yo *, Repeat * to * to 1 st before marker; k1, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, k1, *yo, ssk *, Repeat * to * to last 2 sts, yo, k2. (71 sts)
Row 2: K2, p to last 2 sts, sm as you go, k2.Rows 3–10:Repeat Lace Rows 1 and 2. (87 sts after Row 10)
NOTE: Each section repeat adds 20 sts total.
Repeat Sections I & II two more times. (247 sts total after last row)
Bind off.
Add fringe by cutting remaining yarn into 5" (13 cm) strands and using larks knot to affix to shawl.
